In the early years of the 19th century, the city of Charlotte Amalie (named for a Danish Queen) was built almost entirely of wood. In 1804 a devastating fire swept the town, destroying twelve hundred buildings. Fire leveled the town again in 1806. As a result, builders began using local volcanic stone and imported brick and tile that was used as ballast in the many trading vessels that visited the port. Molasses, a sugar cane product readily available, was used to hold the building materials together.

In 1811, the Jennings family began construction of buildings around us. After their purchase in 1928 by the Paiewonsky family, they were restored and to this day retain their original architecture. The family still maintains the alley and the tropical gardens are a beautiful backdrop to our outdoor cafe.

Everyday, we here at Cafe Amici strive to give the very best we can with the freshest of food and a healthy, well thought out menu. These are the ideals we live by and bring to you.

Thank you for visiting us. Happiness and long life!
